Kim Jung-Sun

Abstract
This article attempts to focus on the ways in which changing medical knowledges and technologies affect the relationship between women and health. First, The theoretical analysis of previous studies discussing the social context of Biomedical Model is presented from three perspectives: sociocultural, political economy, and the feminist perspectives. The feminist perspective, in particular, discusses the economic and social implications of reproductive technologies for women¡¯s health. On the one hand, the reproductive technologies provide women freedom from unwanted pregnancy or help for unwanted infertility. However, it also creates new health challenges, dangers and risks for women. The provision of in-vitro fertilization and artificial insemination is operated in a legal and ethical vacuum with virtually no regulation. The hypotheses of commodification and instrumentalization of female body are tested with the available survey data conducted in 2006. The results show that male respondents at older age group which is likely to indicate the patriarchal characteristics of the group, tend to ignore the risks and dangers of women¡¯s health in the development and application of stem cell research. The article suggests the close attention to the rise of Gender Specific Medicine in medical field as a way to resolve some of the problems related to the medical technology and women¡¯s health.
